Iran Strikes Oil Tanker in Gulf of Oman, Indian National Killed

Incident Overview

On March 2, an oil tanker flying the Marshall Islands flag was reportedly attacked by Iran in the Gulf of Oman, resulting in the death of an Indian national. According to the Maritime Security Centre of Oman, the vessel was struck northwest of Sultan Qaboos Port. A video taken shortly after the incident shows thick black smoke rising from the tanker, creating a scene of chaos. The Maritime Security Centre confirmed in a statement that the oil tanker was targeted and that the crew was evacuated due to a fire outbreak.

The vessel involved has been identified as the MKD VYOM. This incident marks the second attack on an oil tanker in just 24 hours near the Omani coast, as another Palau-flagged tanker named 'Skylight' was also struck by Iranian forces while navigating through the Strait of Hormuz, approximately five nautical miles north of Khasab Port. At that time, the tanker had 20 crew members aboard, including 15 from India.
