Iran Stands with Oman Amid US Threats Over Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Support for Oman
Iran has expressed its backing for Oman following remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who issued threats against the Gulf nation. Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, stated that Iran stands firmly with Oman in light of the "threats from US officials." He also condemned the US military actions targeting regions in Bandar Abbas.
Trump's comments came as he threatened Oman, a nation with longstanding military and economic relations with the US, regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He remarked, "It's international waters, and Oman will behave just like everybody else or we'll have to blow them up. They understand that, they'll be fine." During a cabinet meeting at the White House, he insisted, "No, the strait is going to be open to everybody." This strait is vital for global trade, with approximately one-fifth of the world's oil passing through it.
Iran has hinted at a desire to establish a new framework in the Strait of Hormuz, proposing to impose tolls on ships passing through and share the revenue with Oman.
In a cabinet meeting, Trump noted the delicate state of negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict with Iran, stating that "things are going very well" just days after claiming a settlement was "largely negotiated." However, his Republican allies have voiced concerns that concluding this conflict may leave significant issues unresolved. Trump emphasized the need for a flawless agreement, stating he would not endorse a "crummy" deal.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth highlighted the strength of the US military, even as a recent analysis indicated it might take three years for defense contractors to replenish critical weapon systems utilized in the Iran conflict. Trump also commended his administration's efforts to eliminate fraud, asserting that they are "bringing our country back to honesty."
