Iran Sets Conditions Ahead of US Talks in Islamabad

Iran has laid out its essential conditions for upcoming negotiations with the United States in Islamabad, mediated by Pakistan. Key demands include maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz, receiving war reparations, and the release of frozen assets. As both delegations prepare for discussions, the US has yet to respond to these demands. Meanwhile, President Trump continues to apply pressure on Iran, warning of potential military action if progress is not made. This high-stakes dialogue aims to establish a lasting peace following a recent ceasefire agreement.

Iran's Negotiation Stance

Iran has communicated its essential conditions to Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator, prior to engaging in direct discussions with a United States delegation led by Vice President JD Vance in Islamabad. These crucial negotiations are occurring in Pakistan following an agreement between both parties for a two-week ceasefire aimed at establishing a lasting peace and resolving ongoing conflicts. The Iranian and US delegations arrived in Islamabad late Friday and early Saturday morning. Before initiating direct discussions, both sides asserted their positions, including non-negotiable pre-conditions.

As the talks in Islamabad are still in their early phases, Iran has outlined four critical conditions to Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif before proceeding with direct negotiations with the US delegation. These conditions include:

  • Full Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz
  • Compensation for war damages
  • Release of frozen Iranian assets by the US
  • A stable ceasefire in all areas significant to Iran, including Lebanon

While Iran has presented its demands to Pakistan, there has been no recent response from the US regarding these conditions, except for the issue of frozen assets, where reports indicate that the White House has not yet agreed to their unfreezing, despite conflicting information from Iranian media.

Trump's Ongoing Pressure on Iran

US President Donald Trump is closely observing the situation in Islamabad and has repeatedly warned Tehran that military action could be taken if negotiations do not progress effectively.
