In a significant escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has released video evidence of its naval forces intercepting cargo ships. Iranian officials confirmed the seizure of two vessels, marking the first such incidents since the conflict escalated on February 28.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy stated that the ships were detained for allegedly jeopardizing maritime safety. Officials accused the vessels of operating without proper permits and manipulating navigation systems, asserting that their cargo and documentation would undergo scrutiny.

The detained ships include the MSC Francesca, registered under the Panama flag and operated by the leading global container shipping firm MSC, and the Epaminondas, a Liberian-flagged vessel owned by Greek interests. Reports indicate that the Epaminondas was approached by an IRGC gunboat while navigating the strait, sustaining considerable damage to its bridge from gunfire, although all crew members were reported unharmed.

Additionally, Iranian media mentioned another vessel, the Euphoria, which was allegedly targeted during the same incident. Initial reports indicated it was halted after coming under fire, but subsequent tracking data revealed that it continued its passage through the strait at increased speed. The IRGC did not officially acknowledge this vessel in their statements, leaving the circumstances surrounding its involvement ambiguous.

These interceptions are part of a larger maritime confrontation in the region, with the targeted vessels reportedly belonging to a convoy that had been operating in the Persian Gulf prior to the conflict. Tracking data indicated that several ships in the convoy had turned off their transponders while traversing the strait, complicating monitoring efforts.

These events coincided with the expiration of a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran, with both parties still engaged in negotiations without a conclusive agreement. Iranian officials contend that ongoing restrictions and actions in the area have hindered normal shipping operations, leaving the situation in the Strait of Hormuz precarious, as global trade and energy markets closely observe further developments.
