Iran Criticizes US Truce Proposal as Unreasonable Amid Ongoing Tensions
Iran's Response to US Truce Plan
Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, expressed strong disapproval of the recent truce proposal from the United States, labeling it as 'excessive, unrealistic, and unreasonable' during a press briefing in Tehran.
Baghaei's comments came in response to a 15-point plan presented by the US through intermediaries, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
He contrasted Iran's consistent stance on the matter with what he described as the US's fluctuating positions and contradictory statements.
Baghaei emphasized, 'We are fully aware of our desired framework. The proposals we have received, including the so-called 15-point plan, are largely unrealistic and excessive.'
He also clarified that Iran has not engaged in direct talks with the US since the last negotiations in Geneva on February 26, noting that communications have been relayed through intermediaries like Pakistan.
He mentioned that Iran has not taken part in discussions held by Pakistan involving neighboring countries and will announce its stance on the proposal at an appropriate time.
On February 28, Israel and the US conducted coordinated strikes on Tehran and other Iranian locations, resulting in the death of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with military leaders and civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting US and Israeli assets in the region.
In a related development, US President Donald Trump warned that the US might target Iran's critical energy infrastructure if a deal is not finalized soon and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, despite claiming that negotiations are progressing.
Trump stated that the US is engaged in 'serious discussions' with what he referred to as a 'new, more reasonable regime' in Iran to conclude ongoing military actions.
'Significant progress has been made,' he remarked, suggesting that an agreement could be reached shortly.
However, he issued a stern warning regarding the consequences of failed negotiations, stating, 'If a deal is not reached soon... and if the Hormuz Strait is not reopened, we will obliterate all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells, and Kharg Island.' He also mentioned that 'possibly all desalination plants' could be targeted.
Trump characterized these potential actions as retribution for the loss of American soldiers and others during what he termed Iran's 47-year 'Reign of Terror.'
