Iran's Strong Response to US Submarine Attack

Following the sinking of an Iranian warship by a United States submarine near Sri Lanka, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned that the US would face severe consequences for its actions. He emphasized that the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, which was reportedly visiting India’s Navy, was attacked without any prior notice.

The IRIS Dena had participated in an International Fleet Review in Vishakhapatnam from February 16 to February 25, alongside vessels from various nations.

This incident has resulted in at least 87 fatalities, with 61 individuals still unaccounted for. The attack coincided with a joint operation conducted by the US and Israel targeting the Iranian regime.

Both Tel Aviv and Washington have asserted that Iran's activities represent an “existential threat” to Israel. While Israel claims that Iran is nearing the development of a nuclear weapon, Tehran insists that its nuclear ambitions are solely for peaceful purposes.

Sri Lanka's Efforts to Protect Lives

Sri Lankan authorities are currently working to ensure the safety of another Iranian vessel located in international waters near its maritime boundary. It remains uncertain whether this ship has been attacked or if it has issued a distress signal to Sri Lankan officials.

Minister Nalinda Jayatissa informed Parliament that the ship is situated within the country’s “exclusive economic zone,” and both the government and defense ministry are aware of its location.

This statement follows the sinking of the IRIS Dena by a US submarine, which resulted in numerous casualties, with Sri Lankan forces managing to rescue 32 survivors.

The situation has escalated in West Asia following recent US-Israel strikes on Iran and Tehran's retaliatory actions.

Global Leaders Call for Peace Amidst Rising Tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that military confrontations cannot resolve global issues, addressing the heightened tensions in West Asia during a press conference with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb.

“Whether it’s Ukraine or West Asia, we advocate for an end to conflicts and the establishment of peace as soon as possible,” Modi stated, highlighting the need for “urgent reforms in global institutions” to tackle escalating global challenges.

Earlier this week, opposition figures, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, urged Modi to take a stand on the conflict, warning that silence could undermine India’s international reputation.

“The conflict has reached our doorstep, with an Iranian warship sunk in the Indian Ocean,” Gandhi remarked on social media, criticizing the Prime Minister's lack of response.

Political Developments in Bihar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced his intention to run in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on March 16, indicating that he may resign from his state position if elected. He reassured the public of his ongoing commitment to the development of Bihar.

This announcement has sparked speculation that his son, Nishant Kumar, might be appointed as deputy chief minister, with a Bharatiya Janata Party leader potentially taking over as chief minister.

Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, Jairam Ramesh, and Dipankar Bhattacharya, have criticized this move as a betrayal of the electorate's trust.

Bihar currently has five vacant Rajya Sabha seats, with candidates from the National Democratic Alliance expected to secure four of them without opposition.
