On Friday, Iran's prominent leaders convened at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla to honor the memory of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who passed away recently. The heads of the three branches of the Iranian government were present to pay their respects to the late leader, who had governed Iran for nearly forty years before his assassination on February 28, coinciding with the onset of the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

Among those who paid tribute were military commander Mohsen Rezaee, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The initial phase of the funeral ceremonies for Khamenei has commenced, with dignitaries from various nations, including India, expressing their condolences at Tehran's Grand Mosalla. His presence at the funeral could signify a crucial moment for his legitimacy both domestically and internationally. Conversely, his absence could raise concerns regarding his safety and the current leadership in Iran.

What To Know About Khamenei's Funeral In Iran

The mourning period will involve Khamenei's body being transported through various cities in Iran and neighboring Iraq. His remains will be displayed at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla over the weekend, followed by a procession through Tehran on Monday, before being taken to Qom, a significant Shiite seminary city located approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) south. On Tuesday, Khamenei will be honored in Qom.

On Wednesday, his body will be transported to Karbala, Iraq, a site of immense significance for Shiite Muslims, particularly due to its association with Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. This day also coincides with the anniversary of protests against Khamenei’s regime, which resulted in numerous casualties. Finally, Khamenei will be laid to rest in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, at the Imam Reza shrine, a burial site for many notable Shiite clerics, including the late President Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically died in a helicopter crash in 2024.
