Iran Claims Historic Victory Amidst US Ceasefire Announcement
Iran's Ceasefire Proposal and Its Implications
Iran has proclaimed a "historic victory" following the announcement of a temporary ceasefire by US President Donald Trump. However, the details of Tehran's ceasefire proposal indicate that the issues surrounding its nuclear program remain unresolved. Alongside the ceasefire, Iran introduced a 10-point plan that outlines its conditions for de-escalation, prominently featuring a demand for the United States to acknowledge its right to uranium enrichment, a critical issue for the Islamic Republic.
This pivotal demand has sparked significant controversy. The proposal insists on US recognition of Iran's uranium enrichment activities and the complete removal of sanctions. Notably, a report from AP highlights that the phrase "acceptance of enrichment" appears in the Farsi version of Iran’s proposal but is notably missing from the English translation that has been more widely disseminated. This inconsistency raises concerns about whether the ceasefire framework is intentionally ambiguous or part of a strategic maneuver.
Trump's Stance on Iran's Nuclear Program
It would be surprising if Trump were to agree to Iran's uranium enrichment, given that this issue has been central to the conflict. In his remarks, the US president described the provisional ceasefire with Iran as a "total and complete victory" and asserted that the uranium issue would be "perfectly taken care of" during a phone interview with Agence France-Presse shortly after the ceasefire was announced. "One hundred percent. No question about it," Trump stated.
Trump further claimed that the matter of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile would be "perfectly taken care of" under the agreement, stating, "or I wouldn’t have settled." Previously, he had expressed indifference towards the regime’s stockpiles, suggesting that they could be monitored via satellite. Iran's additional demands for concluding the conflict include control over the Strait of Hormuz, the withdrawal of US troops from the area, the lifting of sanctions, and the release of its frozen assets. These demands reflect an ambition to reshape both the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East and the global oil market.
