Iran's Stance on Regional Security

Tehran: Following an apology to Gulf nations for previous attacks, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reiterated Iran's position regarding its right to self-defense against military threats from the US and Israel. In his recent remarks, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran is targeting the sources of aggression directed at his country.

Key Points from Pezeshkian's Statement: He stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently prioritized maintaining friendly relations with regional governments, grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, this does not diminish Iran's right to defend itself against military actions from the United States and the Zionist regime." He further asserted, "We will defend our nation to the last breath, and our defensive actions are solely aimed at the origins of aggression against Iran, which we deem legitimate targets."

Pezeshkian clarified that Iran's military operations have not targeted neighboring countries but have focused on US military bases and installations in the region. His earlier apology to Gulf nations drew criticism from Iranian lawmakers, with Qom representative Mohammad Manan Raeisi labeling his comments as 'humiliating,' according to reports from Iran International.

Earlier Statements by Pezeshkian: On Saturday, Pezeshkian indicated that Iran would cease attacks on neighboring nations unless provoked by actions from their territories. He mentioned that the interim leadership council had approved this new approach, which aims to de-escalate tensions in the region. He stated, "The temporary leadership council announced yesterday that there will be no more attacks on neighboring countries and no missile launches unless attacks originate from those countries against Iran." Additionally, he expressed regret for the recent strikes that heightened regional tensions. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which began on February 28 with joint US-Israel strikes on Iran, has now entered its eighth day.
