Newborn Twins Reportedly Sold by Parents

Bongaigaon, July 16: In a troubling incident, a pair of newborn twins was reportedly sold by their parents shortly after their birth on June 26 in Bongaigaon district.

Authorities managed to recover one of the infants on Wednesday, while efforts are ongoing to locate the second child, who is believed to be in Dhubri district.

Dulumoni Sutradhar, the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), stated that the police are currently investigating the situation, and it is premature to determine if this case involves illegal adoption or child trafficking.

She mentioned to the media, “The police are looking into the matter, and we cannot yet confirm if it is a case of illegal adoption.”

Sutradhar also indicated that if illegal adoption is established, First Information Reports (FIRs) will be filed against all individuals involved.

A letter has been dispatched to the Superintendent of Police, requesting stringent action should any legal infractions be identified.

Reports indicate that the twins were born at Chilarai Hospital in Bongaigaon to a couple named Pranab Das and Budobala Das, who reside in Ghilaguri.

The DCPO received a complaint that prompted them to visit the couple's home, but they found the parents missing.

The extended family claimed that the couple had a stillborn child and had conducted the last rites.

However, when officials requested documentation to substantiate the stillbirth claim, the family was unable to provide any evidence.

The DCPO team subsequently visited Chilarai Hospital, where Budobala reportedly gave birth to the twins.

The hospital confirmed that both the mother and the infants were discharged on June 30, but staff had no information regarding their whereabouts afterward.

The DCPO added, “The parents have been summoned to our office. They indicated they would come, but they have yet to appear.”

In the meantime, search operations are actively underway to find the second child, with authorities collaborating closely with police in both Bongaigaon and Dhubri districts to ensure the safe recovery of both infants and to hold those responsible accountable.
