Indian Passenger Sentenced for Harassing Flight Attendant on Singapore Airlines
Incident on Flight Leads to Legal Action
A routine flight turned traumatic for a Singapore Airlines flight attendant when she was reportedly harassed by an Indian passenger. According to reports from a local news outlet, a Singapore court sentenced 35-year-old Akash Tiwari to six months in prison on June 22. Additionally, he was ordered to pay approximately S$1,270 in compensation to the victim. The unsettling incident took place in February.
During the flight, Tiwari allegedly molested the attendant while his friends laughed at the situation. The harassment began when the attendant approached their group to confirm meal orders, only to have Tiwari inappropriately touch her thigh. This shocking behavior was met with laughter from his friends, leaving the attendant stunned.
After reporting the incident to her supervisor, the attendant was advised to serve meals away from the group, which did little to alleviate the situation. Later, while collecting food trays, Tiwari again misbehaved, leaning towards her and nudging her back with his elbow. When she confronted him, he merely smirked in response.
One of Tiwari's friends even remarked about wanting a beer to enjoy the 'show.' Despite the attendant's attempts to report the behavior to the chief flight stewardess, Tiwari showed no remorse. The harassment persisted until the flight was landing, where Tiwari continued to follow her closely. Frustrated, the attendant finally shouted at him, prompting him to leave her alone.
Ultimately, the flight captain escalated the matter to the authorities at Changi Airport. Tiwari has since pleaded guilty to charges of molestation and causing distress through threatening behavior.
