Historic Quarterfinals for Indian Women's Doubles

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have made headlines by advancing to the women's doubles quarterfinals at the BWF World Championships. They achieved this feat with a straight-game victory against Japan's seventh-seeded duo, Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.

The Indian pair, currently ranked World No. 39, secured a convincing win with scores of 21-16 and 21-12, marking the first time in 11 years that an Indian women's doubles team has reached this stage, as noted by the Badminton Association of India (BAI).

In the quarterfinals, Treesa and Gayatri will face the fourth-seeded Chinese team of Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shi Xian.

The match saw the Indian duo take an early lead of 13-9 in the first game. Although the Japanese team briefly rallied with seven consecutive points, the Indians regained control, winning the next eight points to clinch the game.

The second game was dominated by the Indian pair, who utilized quick drops and cross-court smashes to maintain pressure on their opponents, finishing the match in just 44 minutes.

Men's Doubles Success

In another exciting development, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also progressed to the quarterfinals after a nail-biting match against Malaysia's Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King, winning with scores of 21-23, 21-19, and 21-17.

The Indian duo faced challenges, saving two game points in the first game before ultimately losing it. They rallied back in the second game, overcoming a 16-18 deficit to force a deciding game.

In the final game, after trailing 12-15, they leveled the score at 17-17 and then secured the match by winning the next four points. They will now compete against the third-seeded Chinese pair, Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang.

Singles Disappointments for India

Despite the success in doubles, the singles events were less favorable for India, with PV Sindhu and Ayush Shetty both exiting the tournament.

Sindhu, a two-time world champion, faced a tough battle against China's third seed Wang Zhi Yi, ultimately losing 21-11, 15-21, 21-17 after an intense 88-minute match. She struggled initially but made a strong comeback in the second game, only to fall short in the decider.

Ayush Shetty's journey also ended with a loss to Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, with scores of 21-19, 21-11.

Despite these setbacks, India's hopes for medals remain alive through the performances of the men's and women's doubles teams.
