Extension of Export Support Initiative

New Delhi: The Commerce Department has announced an extension of the timelines for 'Component II of RELIEF (Resilience & Logistics Intervention for Export Facilitation)', a crucial initiative under the Export Promotion Mission (EPM), now set to continue until March 31, 2027. This extension aims to provide risk coverage for export shipments amid the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, as stated in an official announcement made on Monday.

This decision comes in light of persistent geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have significantly affected maritime logistics in the Gulf and surrounding areas.

'Component II' is designed to motivate exporters to secure Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) coverage for future shipments to designated regions, offering 95% risk coverage.

Eligible exporters can benefit from this initiative for standalone and whole turnover policies acquired on or after March 16, 2026. The initiative ensures that the premiums paid by exporters are shielded from increases beyond pre-disruption levels during the eligible timeframe. The types of cargo covered include Full Container Load (FCL), Less than Container Load (LCL), and refrigerated containers, while energy shipments are excluded.

Exporters wishing to take advantage of the RELIEF initiative must submit their claims and necessary documentation via the ECGC customer portal. Detailed guidance on creating user IDs, completing exporter registration, and filing claims is available through instructional videos on ECGC’s official YouTube channel.

Initiated on March 19, 2026, RELIEF is a focused effort to assist Indian exporters grappling with soaring freight costs, increased insurance premiums, and export risks linked to conflicts in the Gulf and the broader West Asian maritime corridor.

Reports indicate that vessels have been targeted in drone and missile strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, with the threat of conflict extending to the Red Sea following Houthi attacks in Yemen aimed at seizing control of significant coastal territories.

The extension of the RELIEF program highlights the government's dedication to enhancing export resilience, maintaining trade flows, and supporting Indian exporters amidst ongoing geopolitical and maritime logistics challenges.
