New Delhi, August 7: Recent discussions between India and China focused on boundary delimitation, border management, and enhancing trans-border cooperation.
These talks took place during the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) held in New Delhi on August 6, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The MEA noted that both sides engaged in open discussions and assessed the current situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in border regions for the advancement of bilateral relations.
Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) at the MEA, led the Indian delegation, while the Chinese side was represented by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, officials from both nations agreed to continue utilizing existing diplomatic and military channels, including the WMCC and local commander-level meetings, to address unresolved issues and prevent misunderstandings along the LAC.
The MEA highlighted that following the outcomes of the 24th Senior Officials Talks, both sides engaged in detailed discussions regarding boundary delimitation, border management, and trans-border cooperation mechanisms.
The Indian delegation reiterated the urgency of convening the next meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on trans-border rivers and stressed the necessity of sharing technical information regarding upstream projects.
On August 4, the MEA announced that India and China have initiated several measures to enhance people-to-people ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the restoration of civil aviation links.
During a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed optimism that these initiatives would further solidify the positive relationship between the two nations.
Jaiswal stated, "Discussions are ongoing, and the dialogue is progressing positively. Various steps have been implemented to improve relations between our peoples, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the re-establishment of civil aviation connectivity. We believe these actions will enhance the positive relationship between India and China."
The spokesperson addressed concerns raised by the Indian diaspora regarding the increase in derogatory content against Indians and Indian culture on Chinese social media platforms, an issue highlighted during an open forum organized by the Indian Embassy in Beijing.
