Washington DC: The Independence Day Parade in the United States has been called off because of an intense heatwave affecting the Washington area, as reported by a news outlet. Originally set to commence at 10:30 am local time, the event's cancellation has not been officially confirmed yet. A severe heatwave is currently impacting numerous states along the East Coast, leading to the shutdown of the Great American State Fair on Friday and the cancellation of various other Independence Day festivities.

Freedom 250, the organization responsible for coordinating the America 250 celebrations, stated that the Great American State Fair on the National Mall would remain closed until 5:00 pm local time after discussions with public safety officials. In a message shared on social media, they noted, "Due to the heat, and in coordination with public safety officials, the Great American State Fair will be temporarily closed until 5:00 p.m. today." They emphasized that the safety and well-being of guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is their top priority. The organization expressed hope that conditions would improve later in the day, allowing them to welcome everyone back at 5:00 p.m. for the evening's celebrations.

As of shortly after 1:00 pm ET, temperatures in the capital were nearing 100°F, with the heatwave continuing to impact much of the eastern United States.
