Identification of Suspect in Michigan Synagogue Attack: Ayman Mohamad Ghazali
Details of the Attack at Temple Israel
Authorities have confirmed the identity of the individual involved in the assault at Temple Israel located in West Bloomfield Township as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali. This information was provided by the Department of Homeland Security. According to the agency, Ghazali, a naturalized citizen of the United States originally from Lebanon, entered the country in 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of an American citizen. He achieved naturalization in 2016 during Barack Obama's presidency. The DHS stated, "DHS can confirm that the individual involved in the attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, has been identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali."
Earlier reports had mistakenly referred to him as Ayman Ghazaleh. Sources familiar with the investigation, as reported by The Detroit News, indicate that the 41-year-old resided in Dearborn Heights and was employed at Hamido Restaurant. He is believed to have driven a truck loaded with explosives into the synagogue shortly after noon on Thursday, subsequently opening fire before being shot dead by security personnel.
At the time of the attack, approximately 140 children, staff, and congregants were present in the vicinity of the synagogue, all of whom were reported safe. However, a security guard sustained injuries during the gunfire exchange and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
The incident prompted a significant law enforcement response throughout Oakland County, with numerous police vehicles, SWAT teams, and helicopters deployed to search the area for any additional suspects. Nearby schools and places of worship were placed on high alert as a precautionary measure.
This attack has raised alarms regarding the safety of Jewish institutions in North America, especially following a series of similar incidents targeting places of worship in Michigan over the past year.
Impact on Ayman Mohamad Ghazali’s Family
Reports from journalist Ryan Grim and The Detroit News reveal that several of Ghazali’s family members were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the town of Mashghara in Lebanon’s Western Bekaa region. The deceased include Qassem Ghazali, his brother Ibrahim, and Ibrahim’s two children, Ali and Fatima. The Israeli military targeted their residence in Mashghara, resulting in the deaths of these four family members.
This strike was part of a larger Israeli offensive against Lebanon, which involved airstrikes across southern regions, the Bekaa Valley, and Dahiyeh. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, the overall death toll from these attacks has reached at least 123. Investigative sources also indicated that Ghazali had lost at least four relatives, including a sibling, in the airstrike just days prior to the attack in Michigan.
