New Delhi, Oct 1: On Thursday, accolades were directed towards Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his pivotal role in averting a potential disaster on a flydubai flight en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
President Droupadi Murmu commended Machchhar for his “heroic courage and remarkable presence of mind,” expressing national pride in the pilot's determination to safeguard others despite sustaining serious injuries.
“His bravery and swift actions were crucial in preventing a major tragedy and preserving numerous lives,” Murmu noted in a social media update, wishing him a prompt recovery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out to Machchhar’s family, praising the pilot's valor, according to government sources.

Modi emphasized that Indian diplomatic missions are extending all necessary support to the injured pilot, who is currently receiving medical care in a Saudi Arabian hospital.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also recognized Machchhar's bravery, stating that the Indian captain fought back after being attacked, managed to open the cockpit door, and enabled the passengers and crew to subdue the assailant.
“Despite being stabbed and gravely injured, he resisted, opened the cockpit door, and allowed the passengers and crew to overpower the attacker,” Netanyahu shared on a micro-blogging platform.
He highlighted that Machchhar's actions saved the lives of 174 individuals, including both Israeli citizens and other nationals.
Orli Weitzman, the Israeli Consul General to South India, referred to Machchhar as the “real hero,” asserting that his actions prevented what could have escalated into a far more significant tragedy.
“Without Machchhar’s courage, we would have faced a larger disaster,” Weitzman stated during an online briefing.
She mentioned that an Israeli doctor on board provided immediate assistance to Machchhar following the attack, but did not have further updates on his condition.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children.
Reports indicate that the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar with a knife while the flight was in progress.
Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, Machchhar fought back and opened the cockpit door, allowing crew members and passengers to subdue the attacker.
The aircraft sent out emergency signals and made a rapid descent of over 17,000 feet, dropping from 34,000 feet, before diverting to Prince Sultan Bin Abdel Aziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
A passenger recounted that he took control of the aircraft and pulled it upwards after witnessing the rapid descent, based on prior knowledge from television. Other crew members subsequently regained control of the aircraft, according to various media reports.
The flight landed safely in Tabuk, where Machchhar was taken for medical treatment. The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia confirmed that he is in stable condition.
Netanyahu stated that Saudi authorities have detained the co-pilot, although the motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear.
Weitzman characterized the incident as a “terror attack,” but noted that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the identity of those responsible and how the co-pilot managed to bring a knife on board.
Passengers were later transferred to another aircraft to continue their journey to Israel, where they were greeted with cheers upon arrival.
Investigations are currently focused on the circumstances surrounding the cockpit attack, the actions of the co-pilot, and how the weapon was smuggled onto the plane.
