Flood Alerts Issued Following Heavy Rain

MANDI: Following a night of intense rainfall, the water levels in Juni Khud and the Beas River rose significantly early this morning, raising alarms among the residents of Pandoh. This sudden increase has led to a flood-like scenario, reigniting worries in an area still recovering from earlier weather-related issues.

In preparation for the monsoon season, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) activated pre-monsoon flushing operations at the Larji Dam, which included opening all five spillway gates of the Pandoh Dam on Sunday (June 29, 2025). This action has resulted in a heightened outflow into the Beas River.

According to a statement from the BBMB Executive Engineer, the Beas is currently experiencing a flow of approximately 44,000 cusecs, which is being released downstream through the Pandoh Dam. Additionally, the silt concentration has surged to 4,000 PPM, leading authorities to temporarily close the Baggi tunnel as a safety measure. Consequently, power generation at the Dehar power house has been halted.

The rapid flow of Juni Khud, along with the rising levels of the Beas River, is being treated as a critical situation. Both the BBMB and local authorities have issued warnings, advising the public to avoid riverbanks and stay alert.

While officials assert that the situation is manageable at present, they are maintaining vigilant monitoring. Emergency response teams and BBMB personnel are on standby to respond promptly to any unexpected developments.
