Chaos Unfolds in Times Square

New York: A scene of chaos erupted in Times Square on Saturday night as gunfire rang out shortly after the New York Knicks celebrated their NBA championship victory, their first in 53 years. Footage shared online captured the panic as hundreds fled for safety. Fans had gathered outside Madison Square Garden to watch the Knicks face off against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on a large screen. After the Knicks made a remarkable comeback from a 16-point deficit to win, the crowd erupted in jubilation.

However, the celebration quickly turned sour as clashes broke out between some individuals and law enforcement. Reports indicate that individuals vandalized vehicles, climbed light poles, and even stood on top of school buses in the area. Gunshots were reported around 2 AM near the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, with bystanders capturing the incident on video. At least seven shots were fired, and a minor was later found with a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital for medical attention.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded swiftly, making several arrests related to the incident. Numerous injuries were reported among the crowd. Additional footage showed officers detaining a man in Times Square, who was found to be in possession of a firearm.

Damage was reported to several vehicles, including school buses that had been used to transport fans to the event. Some individuals even climbed onto the roofs of these buses. Reports suggest that over 60 individuals were detained in connection with the unrest, and approximately 10 police officers sustained injuries during the altercations. An extensive investigation into the incident is currently underway.

It is noteworthy that the Knicks last secured the Larry O'Brien Trophy in 1973 and had not reached the finals since 1999.
