Giorgia Meloni Sets Record as Italy's Longest-Serving Prime Minister

Rome, September 4: The government led by Giorgia Meloni has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the longest-serving administration in the postwar history of Italy, surpassing the previous record held by Silvio Berlusconi.
Meloni, who made history as Italy's first female Prime Minister when she took office on October 22, 2022, has now completed 1,413 days in her role.
Celebrating this achievement, she expressed her gratitude and acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with it on social media.
In her post, she stated, "Today our Government becomes the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic. This is a fact I embrace with gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility. Stability is not merely a record to boast about; it is essential for a nation to plan, make decisions, fulfill commitments, and earn respect," Meloni shared on social media.
Over the past four years, her administration has focused on boosting employment, lowering unemployment rates, supporting families and businesses, enhancing security, managing public finances responsibly, and restoring Italy's stature and credibility on the global stage. While she acknowledged the progress made, she also recognized that much work remains.
Meloni emphasized that this stability is not solely her achievement but a collective effort of a united coalition that has governed with a shared vision. She noted, "I do not think it is a coincidence that the three longest-serving governments in our republican history are all center-right. Stability is fostered when an alliance shares values, objectives, and a vision for the nation, rather than merely existing to block others from governing," she remarked on social media.
She attributed the stability of her government to the trust placed in her by the Italian people during the 2022 elections, asserting that her administration has never viewed this trust as a blank check and will not take it for granted. With elections approaching next year, she stated that her government would present its achievements and future plans to the citizens.
In her social media post, she added, "Next year, we will present ourselves to the citizens with our accomplishments, what remains to be done, and our vision for the future. Ultimately, it will be up to them to decide if we deserve to continue this journey. In the meantime, our work continues."
To commemorate this milestone, Meloni's administration plans to hold an event in Bari, discussing the government's achievements and future initiatives.
On October 22, 2022, Meloni was sworn in as Prime Minister by President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold this position in Italy.
Her political journey began at the age of 15, and she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a councillor for the Province of Rome at 21 and leading the youth movement of the Alleanza Nazionale party at 27. By 29, she was elected to parliament and served as vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies during the XV Legislature. Notably, she became Italy's youngest minister at 31 when she was appointed Minister for Youth in 2008.
