Funeral Ceremonies in Tehran

On Sunday, the three sons of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud—gathered to pay their respects beside his coffin and those of four other family members during the funeral held in Tehran. Notably absent from the ceremonies was Mojtaba Khamenei, who has taken over as Iran's Supreme Leader. State television showcased images of the brothers standing solemnly behind the coffins at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, a significant religious venue in the capital.

The Islamic Republic has initiated a week-long series of mass funeral events for Khamenei, aiming to demonstrate public allegiance to the theocratic regime and its revolutionary principles. The program includes transporting his remains to esteemed Shi'ite religious sites in neighboring Iraq. Following a day of lying in state for senior Iranian officials and foreign dignitaries, Khamenei's coffin was displayed outdoors on Saturday, encased in glass, alongside those of his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and 14-month-old granddaughter.

As the funeral proceedings commenced, Mojtaba was conspicuously absent. Reports indicate that he sustained injuries during the attack that claimed his father's life and those of other family members on February 28, which involved coordinated strikes by the US and Israel. It has been suggested that Mojtaba suffered facial disfigurement and significant leg injuries during the incident.

Is Mojtaba Khamenei Alive?

The absence of Mojtaba Khamenei from his father's funeral has sparked renewed speculation regarding his health, with some rumors suggesting he may have passed away months prior. However, Iranian officials and representatives of the new Supreme Leader have stated that his absence is due to heightened security concerns. Ayatollah Hakim Elahi, identified as Mojtaba's representative in India, mentioned that threats from Israel and surveillance risks made public appearances perilous. There are concerns in Tehran that any public sighting of Mojtaba could put him at risk amid ongoing tensions with Israel.
