Unrest in France After World Cup Defeat

France: Following a disappointing 2-0 loss to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final held at Dallas Stadium on July 14, riots broke out across various cities in France. This defeat marked Spain's return to the World Cup final after a 16-year hiatus.

The aftermath of the match saw widespread violence and vandalism, with reports indicating that by 6 a.m. local time, at least 141 individuals had been detained in Paris. Authorities noted that many of these arrests were due to the use of firework mortars aimed at police and emergency responders.

Social media platforms were flooded with videos depicting furious crowds in the streets, alongside reports of arson in multiple locations, including the capital city.

France's aspirations for a third World Cup title were dashed with this defeat. The team had previously finished as runners-up in the 2022 World Cup, losing to Argentina in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Spain showcased a strong performance in the semi-final, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the first goal in the 22nd minute, followed by Pedro Porro extending the lead in the 58th minute. France struggled to mount a comeback, with star player Kylian Mbappé unable to turn the tide.

The World Cup final is scheduled for Monday, July 20 (IST), where Spain will compete against the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina.
