Federal Court Blocks Trump from Renaming Kennedy Center
Court Ruling Celebrated by Kennedy Family
The family of former President John F. Kennedy expressed their approval of a federal judge's ruling that prevents President Donald Trump from renaming the Kennedy Center in his honor. Maria Shriver, Kennedy's niece, referred to the decision as a fitting birthday tribute to her uncle, as it coincided with his birth anniversary.
This reaction came on Thursday, following the court's determination that Trump's proposal to rename the renowned cultural venue breached federal law. Shriver took to X to share her thoughts shortly after the ruling was made public, stating, “An appropriate birthday present on my uncle’s birthday today.” She acknowledged the possibility of an appeal, adding, “I know they'll probably appeal and the story isn't over, but for today let’s celebrate a great birthday gift.”
US District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center Board acted unlawfully in their decision to rename the institution. He emphasized that this action contravened “Congress’s express statutory direction” and mandated the removal of Trump’s name from all associated signage, digital content, and official branding.
Additionally, the judge halted plans for a proposed two-year closure of the center, which was reportedly linked to a redevelopment initiative. Cooper criticized the decision-making process, noting that the board relied on “an insufficient, one-sided presentation of information” prior to approving the changes. He reiterated that federal law designates the venue as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The lawsuit challenging the renaming was initiated by Ohio Democrat Joyce Beatty, who contended that the board lacked the legal authority to make such a change. Beatty later broadened her complaint to contest the plans for the center's temporary closure.
Earlier this year, Trump had announced the renaming proposal via a post on Truth Social, indicating that the Kennedy Center would close starting July 4, 2026, as part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States. He also mentioned plans for a “new and spectacular Entertainment Complex.”
