Family of Indian Student Killed in London Seeks Closure and Return of Her Body
Tragic Loss of Kirandeep Kaur
The family of Kirandeep Kaur, a 24-year-old Indian student who was tragically murdered in her west London residence, is grappling with immense grief. Her sister, Gursharan, described Kirandeep as "my world" and expressed the family's desperate wish to have her body returned to India for burial. Kirandeep was fatally attacked in the early hours of July 12 while she was in bed with her husband and infant in Hayes, London.
In an emotional interview with a media outlet, Gursharan shared how the family is struggling to cope with the loss. "She was everything to me; we frequently video called each other. What will we do without her?" she lamented. Originally hailing from Tarn Taran in Punjab, Kirandeep moved to the UK in September 2024 to pursue her studies at Buckinghamshire New University, aiming to create a better future for herself and support her family.
Gursharan recounted that Kirandeep had completed her studies and was employed at a grocery store. Despite their regular video calls, the sisters had not seen each other since Kirandeep's departure for London. "When she arrived, she told me how beautiful it was and how happy she felt," Gursharan recalled. She described her sister as academically talented and deeply committed to her family, stating, "She was always the top student in India and worked very hard. She loved us all dearly."
Kirandeep is survived by her husband, child, parents, and three siblings. The family learned of her death from a villager and remains in the dark about the circumstances surrounding it. "I am struggling to cope with this news. My parents are heartbroken," Gursharan shared. "We are four siblings: my older brother, Kirandeep, and two younger siblings. I am the youngest sister." She mentioned that their mother has been inconsolable since hearing the news, and their father is also unwell.
Gursharan expressed how much Kirandeep meant to her, stating, "She supported me in my studies and wanted me to succeed." The family never anticipated such a tragedy would occur after Kirandeep moved abroad. "We never thought something like this could happen to her in London," she said. "I looked up to her; she even helped pay for my education." Now, the family is appealing for Kirandeep's body to be returned to India for a proper burial in their hometown. "I haven't seen her since she left in 2024. I want to see her one last time," Gursharan pleaded. "My parents also wish to see her one last time, and we want the funeral to be held in our village in India."
In recent days, members of the Sikh community in west London have held vigils to honor Kirandeep's memory. Gursharan expressed her gratitude for the support from the local community, saying, "We appreciate everyone in London who has attended the gatherings and vigils for my sister." She added that the family hopes no other family has to endure such a loss. "We wish for this never to happen to anyone else. We want her body back for her rightful funeral in our hometown."
