A significant explosion occurred in a residential building located on Rue Révérend-Père-Louis-Frolla in Monaco, close to the French border. Authorities reported that the blast followed the departure of a man who left a backpack behind before fleeing the scene. Three individuals sustained injuries, with two of them in serious condition, as police continue their search for the individual responsible.
The explosion took place just before 9 PM on Monday, June 29, prompting a swift emergency response. The government of Monaco has labeled the incident as a "deliberate" act. Surveillance footage revealed a person placing a backpack at the entrance of the building while several residents were entering. The suspect then walked away, and shortly after, the explosion occurred.
Following the blast, the suspect reportedly fled on foot towards Beausoleil, a nearby French town. In the immediate aftermath, officials indicated that casualties were likely, leading to the mobilization of all necessary emergency services. By around 10 PM, the Monaco government confirmed that three people had been injured, including two with serious injuries, as reported by AFP.
Emergency response efforts were bolstered by support from France, with five vehicles and 14 firefighters from the Alpes-Maritimes fire and rescue service dispatched to Monaco, arriving around 10:15 PM to assist local responders.
In response to the incident, Nice Mayor Éric Ciotti expressed his condolences via social media, referring to the explosion as an "attack" and a "tragedy." He stated, "Thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Full support to the security forces and emergency services mobilized." As of now, no arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large as the investigation continues.
