Reports indicate that two US military helicopters were engaged in search-and-rescue missions for a downed F-15E fighter jet when they came under Iranian fire. A US official confirmed to NBC News that all personnel aboard the helicopters were unharmed, although some crew members sustained injuries. Both helicopters successfully returned to their base, as reported by The Washington Post.
The helicopters were part of efforts to recover two US crew members from an F-15E Strike Eagle that was shot down over Iran. One pilot has been rescued, while the other remains unaccounted for. Additionally, Iranian state-affiliated media claimed that an American helicopter was struck during the rescue operation aimed at locating the downed pilots. Other reports suggested that a US UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was downed near the Iranian border while assisting in the recovery of the fighter jet pilot.
According to these accounts, the Black Hawk was targeted while it was engaged in the rescue mission. Iranian media further alleged that a US pilot was captured after ejecting from the F-15E over central Iran. In a related incident, Iranian forces reportedly targeted an A-10 attack aircraft, which managed to return to Kuwaiti airspace before the crew ejected and were subsequently rescued, as per a US official cited by The Washington Post.
These incidents occur amid ongoing search-and-rescue operations following the downing of the F-15E in southern Iran, marking a notable moment as it is the first instance of a US aircraft being shot down behind enemy lines during this operation.
