Emergency Response to Fire Disrupts Penn Station Commute

A fire at Penn Station caused significant disruptions to train services, particularly affecting the Long Island Rail Road. Emergency responders quickly addressed the situation, and while the fire was extinguished, commuters are facing delays of up to an hour. The subway system is cross-honoring LIRR tickets to assist stranded travelers. NJ Transit has also made adjustments to its services. Commuters are advised to check for real-time updates and plan for a challenging travel experience throughout the day.

Fire Incident at Penn Station

On Thursday at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time, smoke was detected inside Penn Station, triggering a significant emergency response. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) identified the source as a feeder cable fire located on the tracks between 31st Street and 7th and 8th Avenues. Over 80 fire and emergency medical service personnel were dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. An Amtrak representative indicated that the fire was extinguished by around 1:15 p.m., allowing Northeast Corridor services to resume shortly after, at approximately 1:30 p.m. However, commuters can expect lingering delays throughout the evening, with congestion causing potential wait times of up to an hour.

Impact on Long Island Rail Road Services

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) experienced the most significant disruptions. Services between Jamaica and Penn Station were temporarily halted, with all westbound trains terminating at Jamaica instead of continuing into the city. Specific branch impacts included:

  • Babylon and Huntington trains redirected to Grand Central Madison.
  • Ronkonkoma and Port Washington trains were completely canceled.
  • Delays were reported on the Far Rockaway and Long Beach lines.

Riders are advised to visit the MTA's website for real-time updates as the situation develops throughout the afternoon.

Subway Cross-Honoring Measures

To assist commuters affected by the disruptions, the subway system is allowing LIRR ticket holders to use their tickets within the City Terminal Zone at no extra charge. This includes access to the following subway lines and stations:

  • Penn Station
  • Forest Hills
  • Kew Gardens
  • Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer on the E line
  • Grand Central on the 4, 5, 6, and 7 lines
  • Woodside on the 7 line

NJ Transit Adjustments

NJ Transit also faced some impact, albeit to a lesser extent. The agency opted to divert its Midtown Direct trains as a precautionary measure to manage the number of trains entering Penn Station. Officials clarified that this diversion was a response to the fire department's activities at the station rather than the fire itself.

Anticipated Commute Challenges

Despite the fire being extinguished and Amtrak services resuming, commuters should prepare for a challenging afternoon and evening commute through Penn Station. Delays of up to an hour are likely to continue as the backlog of trains is cleared. Travelers are encouraged to allocate extra time for their journeys, check their carrier's app or website before departing, and consider alternative routes when feasible.
