Emergency Landing of Dubai-Israel Flight Sparks Hijacking Fears

Tel Aviv: A commercial flight from Dubai to Israel was compelled to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, raising alarms about a potential hijacking and leading Israel to deploy warplanes.

Israeli media reports, citing security sources, indicated that the situation arose from a dispute between the pilots, with all passengers reported safe. The aircraft landed at Tabuk, which serves both civilian and military purposes.

Shortly after takeoff, the FlyDubai flight issued an emergency signal, as per flight tracking data.

A regional official familiar with the matter stated that a confrontation occurred in the cockpit, reportedly involving the pilots, although the cause of the altercation remains unclear.

Another official confirmed that Israel scrambled fighter jets, concerned about a possible hijacking involving numerous Israeli citizens. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had recently cautioned about heightened security threats.

Both officials requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.

Netanyahu's office later reassured that the situation was managed and efforts were underway to repatriate the passengers.

While emergency landings due to crew disputes are uncommon, they do happen. For instance, in 2022, two Air France pilots faced suspension after a cockpit altercation on a flight from Geneva to Paris, which did not require diversion.

Passengers communicated with Israel's Channel 12, reporting that they heard shouting from the front of the aircraft, where the pilots were involved in the dispute, and noted a steep descent before landing in Saudi Arabia.

They also mentioned that all passengers remained on board, with a significant presence of Saudi security forces around the aircraft.

FlyDubai operates as a budget counterpart to Emirates airlines. Since the normalization of relations in 2020, the UAE has become a favored travel destination for Israeli tourists.

According to Flight Radar, the incident unfolded approximately two and a half hours after departure.

FlyDubai later acknowledged that flight FZ 1073, heading to Ben Gurion Airport, encountered an incident and landed safely in Tabuk on Wednesday.

"Our teams are collaborating closely with the relevant authorities," the airline stated. "Further updates will be provided as more confirmed information becomes available."

Historically, Israelis faced numerous hijackings and attacks by Palestinian militants during the 1960s and 1970s. Although Israel has not seen a hijacking in decades, it enforces some of the world's strictest airport security measures, including thorough check-in protocols for flights heading to Israel.

Since the normalization of ties in 2020, commercial flights have been operating between Israel and the UAE.
