Elon Musk's Starlink Service Restored for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
Starlink Speeds Restored for Ukrainian Forces
Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Starlink and Starshield satellite internet services have been restored to their previous operational speeds, which had been disrupted for over a week, affecting military operations.
Zelenskyy shared on X that the restoration process began overnight and was completed by Saturday morning, significantly enhancing logistics and defense capabilities against Russian drone attacks.
Musk Acknowledges Speed Restrictions
Following Ukraine's announcement of restored services, Elon Musk addressed the speed limitations imposed last week. In a post on X, he confirmed that SpaceX had indeed throttled the Starlink service.
Musk stated, "Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be. The Ukrainian military violated Starlink's terms of service by using it for offensive operations. That loophole was closed last week."
He emphasized that the US government had control over any modifications made to Starshield, the military-grade version of Starlink crucial for Ukraine's drone operations and communications. Musk also defended SpaceX's contributions to Ukraine's defense since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
Concerns Over Restrictions
The recent restrictions on Starshield had raised alarms among Ukrainian military and government officials, with reports of lost drones and disrupted missions.
This restoration coincides with renewed US diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. Russia has agreed to engage in three-way negotiations with Washington and Kyiv next month. Additionally, a localized ceasefire was brokered by Melania Trump around the war-torn town of Oleshky in southern Kherson.
Tensions Between Ukraine and the US
The situation has heightened tensions between Kyiv and Washington, already strained by President Donald Trump's alleged deal with Moscow regarding Russian diesel imports, which Ukraine perceived as a betrayal.
Ukraine's Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara credited the successful restoration to "direct dialogue" and Zelenskyy's diplomatic efforts with the US, emphasizing its importance for military logistics and drone operations.
Questions linger regarding who initiated the interruptions to the satellite internet service that Ukraine has depended on for years to counter Russian aggression.
Trump has denied making the call for the restrictions, while Musk should not be held accountable. Vice President J D Vance hinted at possible coordination between the White House and Musk, although Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have denied any administration involvement.
Continued Attacks Between Russia and Ukraine
In related news, a missile strike in Lozova, located in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, resulted in one fatality and two injuries, according to local officials.
Authorities in Russian-occupied Crimea reported power outages following Ukrainian attacks overnight.
Ukrainian forces targeted a chemical plant in Tolyatti, Russia, which produces materials for rocket fuel, causing damage to industrial facilities, as confirmed by Tolyatti's Mayor Ilya Sukhikh.
Additionally, Ukrainian forces struck an electronics plant in Oryol, resulting in three fatalities from Friday's attack. This facility manufactures components for the missiles used against Ukrainian cities.
Ukrainian drones have also reached the Omsk region in western Siberia, over 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Omsk's Governor Vitaly Khotsenko reported that drones targeted a northern industrial hub.
Online retailer Ozon confirmed that its logistics center in Omsk was attacked by a drone, although there were no reported casualties. Ozon competes with Wildberries, which has also been targeted by Ukraine.
