Donald Trump to Present State of the Union Address on February 24
Trump's Upcoming State of the Union Address
On February 24, Donald Trump will give his first official State of the Union address of his second term, just under a year after delivering the longest speech ever recorded before a joint session of Congress. His 2025 address clocked in at an impressive one hour, 39 minutes, and 32 seconds, as noted by the American Presidency Project at the University of California Santa Barbara. This speech not only set a new record for the longest State of the Union or joint session address but also surpassed the previous record held by Bill Clinton, whose final address in 2000 lasted one hour, 28 minutes, and 49 seconds.
Trump's presidency has been marked by lengthy congressional speeches, with his first term speeches averaging around one hour and 20 minutes. The longest address from that period was during the 2019 State of the Union, which lasted one hour, 22 minutes, and 25 seconds. The 2025 address also set a record for word count, totaling 9,906 spoken words, exceeding Joe Biden's previous record of 9,216 words from his 2023 address.
Last year's address showcased significant political divisions, as Trump criticized liberal lawmakers while some Democrats protested during the speech. This year, he is anticipated to highlight his administration's accomplishments as Republicans aim to solidify their stance ahead of the midterm elections. Notably, some Democrats have indicated they will not attend the address. The shortest State of the Union speech on record was given by Richard Nixon on January 20, 1972, lasting just 28 minutes and 55 seconds. The 2026 State of the Union is set to commence after 21:00 ET.
