DHS Counterterrorism Official Faces Allegations, Placed on Leave
Allegations Against Julia Varvaro
Julia Varvaro, a 29-year-old official in counterterrorism at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has been put on administrative leave amid serious allegations regarding her personal life. Reports indicate that the investigation was initiated following a complaint from her ex-boyfriend, who accused her of treating him as a 'sugar daddy' and seeking financial support to maintain a luxurious lifestyle. Varvaro has refuted these claims, labeling them as the fabrications of a bitter ex-partner. She expressed her disbelief, stating, 'This is just a mad ex-boyfriend putting crap together. And it’s just really weird.'
The controversy reportedly began after Varvaro connected with a divorced business executive, known as Robert B., on a dating app in December. Following their breakup, Robert B. lodged a complaint with the DHS Office of Inspector General, alleging that Varvaro's behavior could potentially jeopardize national security.
He claimed to have spent around $40,000 on Varvaro during their brief relationship, which included trips to various destinations such as Italy, San Diego, South Carolina, and Aruba, along with extravagant gifts like a $3,500 handbag and a $1,000 camera. According to him, Varvaro often solicited financial help, including requests for rent money and access to a credit card in her name. 'She was asking me for a credit card in her name so she could just shop and not ask for permission,' he stated, noting that this demand created friction between them.
Screenshots shared by the media reportedly show Varvaro asking for $2,000 for rent and expressing dissatisfaction when financial assistance was delayed. In one message, she mentioned, 'I like feeling provided for and you’re not doing that for me, so not sure it will work.' Despite the accusations, Varvaro insists that her expectations were not out of the ordinary, arguing that it is common for women to anticipate access to their partner's credit card and denying any intention of engaging in a 'sugar daddy/prostitution relationship.'
The DHS Office of Inspector General has refrained from confirming or denying the investigation's status, adhering to its established policy. Representatives from DHS have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the matter.
