Major Blast at Ta' Lourdes Fireworks Factory
A significant explosion occurred at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Malta early on Monday, creating a towering column of black smoke and causing tremors in nearby homes. The incident took place at the Ta' Lourdes Fireworks Factory located in Salina. Police reported that the initial explosion took place around 6:35 AM, followed closely by a second, more intense blast. Residents in the vicinity described the force of the explosions as being felt well beyond the factory's premises. Local media shared videos capturing thick black smoke billowing from the site, with fireworks continuing to detonate for hours after the first explosion.

Fortunately, no employees were present at the factory during the explosions, but two men working in adjacent fields sustained minor injuries. Reports from local sources indicated that four cows were also killed due to the incident. For those living nearby, the blasts were impossible to overlook. Edward Mercieca, a resident in close proximity to the factory, recounted being jolted awake by the initial explosion, describing it as if a massive hammer had struck his home. He estimated that the smoke plume reached heights of approximately a thousand feet (300 meters).
The explosions caused damage to buildings and shattered windows in surrounding properties, as confirmed by eyewitness accounts and footage. Even hours after the initial blast, smaller explosions continued to be heard from the site.
Prime Minister Robert Abela took to social media to express his concern for those impacted by the morning explosion, stating that emergency services were promptly dispatched to provide assistance. This incident occurred shortly after Abela's Labour Party achieved a fourth consecutive term in office. While emergency responders remained on-site throughout the day, the cause of the explosion has yet to be determined, and investigations are anticipated to proceed as officials evaluate the damage from one of the most significant industrial explosions witnessed on the island in recent months.
