Sammy Calls for Enhanced Performance in WTC

Dhaka [Bangladesh], October 26: Daren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies cricket team, has urged his players to elevate their game in the World Test Championship (WTC). He emphasized that achieving a top-five finish in the current cycle could lead to better financial rewards as the team gears up for a two-Test series against Bangladesh. Previously, the West Indies finished eighth in the last two WTC cycles, but they now have a chance to improve their ranking in the ongoing 2025-27 edition, with their final series starting on Wednesday.

Financial Challenges and Team Motivation

Last month, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a 25% cut in retainer fees for players as part of measures to tackle financial and competitive issues. Despite this, Sammy noted that the team's spirit remained intact during their recent white-ball tour in India, and he hopes for a similar response in the upcoming Tests against Bangladesh. He stated, "The way we played in India, despite the news about pay cuts, shows our drive and passion to uplift West Indies cricket."

Incentives for Performance

Sammy highlighted that the potential for additional prize money in the WTC should serve as motivation for the players to enhance their standings and improve their future contract negotiations. He remarked, "Finishing in the top five in this World Test Championship comes with extra incentives. The ICC has invested significantly in prize money, and this is a chance for us to rise from our previous eighth-place finishes."

Preparation for the Bangladesh Series

While the financial situation isn't a primary topic in the dressing room, Sammy encouraged players to focus on their performances to attract sponsors and enhance their earnings. He mentioned, "We are aware of our financial situation, but we need to put ourselves in a better position to negotiate and draw in sponsors through our on-field performances." The West Indies have had a positive year in Test cricket, having beaten Sri Lanka 1-0 and drawn with Pakistan 1-1, remaining unbeaten in their Test series this year.

Training Camp in Chennai

The West Indies squad recently held a preparatory camp in Chennai before the Bangladesh Tests. Sammy praised the board for providing the necessary facilities and support for effective preparation. The camp included guidance from the batting coach and Sriram Krishnamurthy from the Chennai Academy, helping players acclimatize to conditions expected in the series. Sammy stated, "We aimed to give our players the best chance to prepare, and the facilities in Chennai were excellent."

Looking Ahead

With two Tests remaining in their WTC campaign, the West Indies aim to convert their preparation and recent successes into tangible results, improving their standings and financial prospects through strong performances on the field.
