Former Australian cricket star Damien Martyn has awakened from an induced coma after spending over a week in the hospital due to meningitis, as reported by a local media outlet on Sunday.


The 54-year-old cricketer was admitted to Gold Coast University Hospital on December 27 after experiencing severe health issues, leading to his placement in an induced coma. Adam Gilchrist, another former Australian cricketer, confirmed that Martyn is now able to communicate and respond to treatment. Martyn played for Australia in 67 Test matches, 208 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and four T20 Internationals from 1992 to 2006, and is celebrated as one of the finest ODI finishers in cricket history.

Martyn's partner, Amanda, released a statement expressing gratitude for the support received during this challenging time. Martyn is known for his graceful batting style, concluding his Test career with 4,406 runs across 67 matches, averaging 46.37, which includes 13 centuries. In ODIs, he amassed 5,346 runs in 208 matches at an average of 40.80, with five centuries and 37 half-centuries to his name.


One of his standout moments came during the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, where he was awarded Player of the Series, finishing as the top scorer in four of Australia's eight innings and contributing to Australia's first away series victory in India in several years.
