Controversy Surrounds Texas Congressional Candidate Maureen Galindo Over Antisemitic Remarks
Maureen Galindo Faces Backlash in Texas Congressional Race
Maureen Galindo, a candidate for Congress in Texas, is under fire for her provocative comments regarding Zionists, Jews, and Israel as she vies for a position in the Democratic runoff for the 35th Congressional District. Her campaign, marked by anti-establishment sentiments and contentious social media activity, has drawn criticism from fellow Democrats, including James Talarico, a candidate for the Senate. Talarico stated that Galindo's “antisemitic rhetoric has no place in our politics” and indicated he would not support her if she wins the runoff scheduled for May 26.
Background on Maureen Galindo
Galindo, a single mother and a therapist specializing in sex and family issues, gained local recognition for her opposition to a redevelopment initiative that threatened affordable housing in San Antonio. Despite a modest campaign budget of approximately $11,000, she secured the top spot in the Democratic primary with 29.2% of the votes, leading her to a runoff against sheriff’s deputy Johnny Garcia.
Recently, Galindo has faced significant backlash for her remarks about “Zionist Jews,” claiming that “Zionist billionaires control the world.” In an interview with the San Antonio Current, she alleged that “Israeli, Jewish billionaire Zionists” have a disproportionate influence over media outlets, financial institutions, and Hollywood. On social media, she expressed intentions to draft legislation that would categorize all forms of Zionism as inherently antisemitic. Additionally, she suggested repurposing a local immigrant detention facility into a prison for “American Zionists and former ICE officers,” which she controversially described as a “castration processing center for pedophiles.”
Galindo has refuted claims of antisemitism, asserting in a Texas Public Radio interview: “I’m not antisemitic… I’m against Zionist Jews.” She further claimed that “The Zionist Jews control our media, our banks, and all of our politicians.” Garcia has condemned her statements as damaging and antisemitic, cautioning that such rhetoric could alienate voters from the Democratic Party. In response, the Democratic Majority for Israel has initiated a substantial advertising campaign supporting Garcia and opposing Galindo.
