Controversy Surrounds India's ODI Squad Selection for New Zealand Series
India's ODI Squad Raises Eyebrows
The announcement of India's team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand has ignited discussions, particularly regarding the exclusion of several standout players from the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Here are four key players who were left out despite their remarkable performances in domestic cricket.
Sanju Samson's Impressive Return
Sanju Samson made a strong comeback in List-A cricket, scoring 101 runs off 95 balls against Jharkhand, which included three sixes and nine fours, leading Kerala to an eight-wicket victory. This marked his fourth List-A century, yet he has not played in ODIs since scoring 108 against South Africa in Paarl in 2023. With a total of 510 runs in 16 ODIs at an impressive average of 56.66, his omission from the squad is perplexing. Rishabh Pant remains the backup wicketkeeper to KL Rahul, leaving Samson on the sidelines once more.
Axar Patel's All-Round Performance
Axar Patel demonstrated his versatility by scoring a maiden List-A century against Andhra, amassing 130 runs off 111 balls, complemented by five sixes and ten fours. He also excelled with the ball, taking 2/27 in six overs, which helped Gujarat secure a narrow seven-run victory. Axar last played ODIs against Australia, where he took three wickets and contributed valuable runs. Despite his strong domestic performance, he was overlooked for the New Zealand series in favor of Ravindra Jadeja.
Mohammad Shami's Continued Excellence
Veteran fast bowler Mohammad Shami maintained his excellent form during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, claiming 3/55 as Bengal triumphed over Assam by 85 runs. He has taken 11 wickets in five matches with an economy rate of 5.65. Shami also shone in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, securing 16 wickets in seven games, and has 20 wickets in four Ranji Trophy matches this season. Despite these impressive statistics, selectors chose Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana over him. Shami's last ODI appearance was against New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India emerged victorious.
Tilak Varma's Exclusion After Strong Performance
Hyderabad captain Tilak Varma scored his sixth List-A century, hitting 109 off 118 balls against Chandigarh, which included three sixes and six boundaries, leading his team to a 136-run victory. Varma was part of India's ODI squad against South Africa, participating in the third match without needing to bat. Despite his recent form, he was dropped for the New Zealand series, a decision that seems harsh considering his contributions.
