Social Media Outcry Over Afridi's Reception
A recent event in Dubai, where a community of expatriates from Kerala warmly welcomed Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, has sparked significant controversy on social media. Following this incident, the Cochin University B.Tech Alumni Association (CUBAA) in the UAE issued an apology, clarifying that their intention was not to offend anyone. The welcome took place during an inter-college dance competition organized by CUBAA, and a video of the event went viral, showcasing attendees chanting Afridi's famous nickname, 'Boom Boom.'
In the footage, Afridi is seen praising Kerala and its cuisine. However, this enthusiastic reception did not sit well with many netizens and right-wing supporters. Critics on social media condemned CUBAA, pointing out that Afridi had recently made derogatory comments about Pahalgam, with others arguing against honoring someone who has made statements against their country. In response to the backlash, CUBAA posted an apology on Instagram on Friday, explaining the circumstances surrounding the event.
CUBAA clarified that they had booked the venue for their second season of the dance competition through the Pakistan Association Dubai, a location they had used the previous year due to its affordability. The organizers noted that by May 25, the day of their event, tensions between India and Pakistan had already eased. However, on that same day, several cricketers, including Afridi, arrived at the auditorium for another event. CUBAA emphasized that neither their team nor any alumni member had invited Afridi to the occasion.
