Messi's Emotional Farewell Game

Lionel Messi's farewell match for Argentina has stirred up controversy following strong objections from the Benin team. The friendly encounter took place at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, where Messi concluded his international career with a stellar performance, scoring a goal in a 3-0 win.

In a fairytale conclusion to his remarkable international journey, Messi converted a penalty in the 71st minute and assisted goals for Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz in the 48th and 61st minutes, respectively, delighting over 85,000 fans in attendance.

Benin's Frustration

While the stadium celebrated Messi's emotional farewell, the Benin team expressed their dissatisfaction regarding limited access and a perceived lack of hospitality from the Argentine hosts.

Benin's coach, Gernot Rohr, shared with RMC Sport that his players encountered unexpected barriers when attempting to engage with the Argentine stars.

"My players tried everything, but nothing worked. The Argentinians didn't give our players anything, not even a photo with Messi," Rohr stated.

The Benin football federation has reportedly expressed outrage over their treatment during Messi's farewell match.

Strict Security Measures

The security at the stadium was reportedly stringent during Messi's farewell, with over 85,000 fans inside and many more outside, leading to a tight lockdown.

Although Benin players managed to have a brief interaction with Messi post-match, they were denied any physical memorabilia.

Rohr elaborated on the chaotic atmosphere, explaining how even simple requests for photographs and jersey exchanges were denied by security personnel stationed near the player tunnel and dressing rooms.

"We wanted to exchange shirts, but we didn't get any. They wouldn't even allow us to enter their player corridor. Security was turning everyone away," he explained.

Despite the challenges, Rohr managed to wait 30 minutes to speak with Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, and secured an autograph on an older Messi jersey he had brought.

Although the Benin team was presented with a bouquet in their national colors before the match, they left feeling disappointed by the cold reception.

No official response has been issued by the Argentina camp regarding the complaints from the Benin delegation.
