Close Call at John Wayne Airport: United Airlines Flight Avoids Collision with Helicopter

A United Airlines flight experienced a near miss with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter at John Wayne Airport, prompting an FAA investigation. The incident, which occurred during the plane's landing approach, has raised significant concerns about aviation safety, especially following recent regulatory changes. Experts are questioning how both aircraft came so close together at a busy airport, particularly after another serious aviation accident at LaGuardia Airport. This alarming trend highlights the need for improved safety measures in crowded airspace.

Close Call at John Wayne Airport: United Airlines Flight Avoids Collision with Helicopter

Mid-Air Incident at John Wayne Airport

A frightening situation occurred at John Wayne Airport on Tuesday morning when a United Airlines flight, carrying 168 passengers, narrowly escaped a collision with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. The Boeing 737 was approaching for landing when air traffic control alerted the crew about a helicopter crossing its path. Reports indicate that the pilots quickly identified the helicopter, with the captain confirming visual contact after receiving a traffic alert. To ensure safety, the pilots leveled off the aircraft, aborting the landing to maintain a safe distance from the helicopter.

The audio from air traffic control revealed the tense communication as the flight crew informed controllers about the helicopter's location. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this incident. However, it has sparked renewed concerns regarding aviation safety, especially following the recent implementation of new regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation regarding helicopter operations near busy airports. These regulations were introduced after a similar incident occurred in Burbank.

Kris Van Cleeve, a transportation correspondent, expressed concern over the situation, stating, “The helicopter and the plane shouldn't have been that close together.” He emphasized the ongoing questions about how both aircraft found themselves in such proximity, particularly at a busy airport. The FAA is currently investigating the near miss to determine if there were any lapses in communication or procedures.

This incident follows another serious aviation accident where an Air Canada plane at LaGuardia Airport collided with a truck, resulting in the tragic deaths of two pilots and injuries to several others. With these two incidents occurring in quick succession, experts are increasingly alarmed about the safety of aircraft navigating congested airspace and operating in busy airport environments.
