Chilli Thomas Faces Backlash Over Controversial Repost and Political Donations
Ongoing Controversy Surrounding Chilli
The ongoing controversy involving TLC member Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas continues to escalate, with an influencer and podcast host now voicing his concerns about a larger issue within the Black community. Chilli's troubles began when she seemingly shared a post related to a conspiracy theory suggesting that former First Lady Michelle Obama was not born female and had previously registered to vote in Illinois as a male. Such claims are prevalent in far-right online circles and have been thoroughly debunked. In her defense, Chilli stated, "I'm not very computer-savvy, so I was looking for the repost button, and I accidentally hit it while scrolling through. It was a mistake."
Influencer Knowa De Baraso Responds
Influencer and podcast host Knowa De Baraso was not convinced by Chilli's explanation. He took to Instagram stories to express his views, arguing that her situation exemplifies a broader issue he has been addressing for years: misinformation within the Black community. He stated, "Chilli represents what I've been fighting against for years. This isn't just about her; it's about how disinformation spreads and takes root."
Political Donations Under Scrutiny
In addition to the Michelle Obama controversy, Chilli has come under fire for her political contributions. Records from the Federal Election Commission indicate she donated over $1,000 to Republican fundraisers associated with Donald Trump's 2024 campaign, including $340.60 to the Trump National Committee JFC and $210.60 to WinRed, a payment processor for Republican donations. Chilli responded to these contributions, claiming she believed the funds were aimed at combating human trafficking and aiding military veterans, stating, "I did not read the fine print." De Baraso dismissed her explanation, bluntly stating, "Chilli voted for a scrub."
De Baraso's Broader Argument
De Baraso's critique extended beyond Chilli herself. He challenged the notion that the Republican Party is the natural political home for Black Americans or that Democrats have done nothing for the community. He referenced the historical realignment of parties during the Civil Rights era and highlighted funding initiatives under Joe Biden, including a proposal to allocate $2 billion to Black farmers, which was blocked by the Republican-controlled Supreme Court. He argued, "If that were true, Joe Biden wouldn't have tried to give $2 billion to Black farmers," and dismissed misleading narratives. He also suggested that Chilli might believe the Republican Party represents Black interests, asserting, "It's not."
