BJP Intensifies Political Outreach Ahead of Assam Elections with High-Profile Visits
Political Engagement and Development Initiatives in Assam
Guwahati, Dec 17: As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections approach, the ruling BJP is gearing up to enhance its political and developmental initiatives in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are scheduled to make several significant visits to Assam later this month.
During a live announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that these visits will highlight transformative infrastructure projects and bolster economic confidence.
On December 20, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, a project valued at approximately Rs 4,000 crore. The terminal, designed with indigenous bamboo and inspired by the traditional kopou phool (foxtail orchid), reflects Assam’s cultural heritage while offering world-class aviation facilities.
Additionally, an 80-foot statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi will be unveiled during this event.
“The new terminal is exceptionally beautiful and features state-of-the-art facilities. Bamboo sourced from Assam has been extensively utilized, and its design embodies our culture,” Sarma stated, noting that he would personally showcase the terminal a day prior to its inauguration.
The Chief Minister also outlined future infrastructure developments around the airport, including an elevated corridor that will connect Guwahati airport to Jalukbari, with a proposal expected from the National Highways Authority of India soon.
Plans for an aerocity project, an aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub, and an aviation training school equipped with simulators are also underway, aimed at generating job opportunities for local youth.
Following the airport inauguration, the Prime Minister will hold a meeting in Guwahati on December 20 and later engage with BJP workers at the party office.
On December 21, Modi will visit the inland waterways terminal on the Brahmaputra, which was inaugurated last month by Nirmala Sitharaman. He will board the Charaideo ferry and participate in a Pariksha Pe Charcha session with 25–30 students from Classes 9, 10, and 11, discussing exam-related stress and preparation.
“The Prime Minister’s ferry journey across the Brahmaputra is expected to enhance tourism. Similar to the increase in tourist numbers following his visit to Kaziranga, we anticipate this will promote the Brahmaputra as a key tourism destination,” Sarma remarked.
Moreover, the Prime Minister will pay tribute at the Assam Movement Martyrs’ Memorial, honoring the 860 martyrs, marking a historic moment as it will be the first time a sitting Prime Minister has done so. Later, Modi will head to Dibrugarh, which the state government is developing as Assam’s second capital.
A significant focus during the Dibrugarh visit will be the expansion of the Namrup fertiliser plant.
The existing facility produces around three lakh metric tonnes of urea annually, while a new Rs 10,000-crore project, funded jointly by the Centre (60 percent) and the Assam government (40 percent), aims to increase production to 12 lakh metric tonnes.
“This initiative will make Assam self-sufficient in fertiliser production and facilitate exports to other regions of India,” Sarma explained.
After Modi's departure, the Home Minister will arrive in Assam on December 29 for a series of culturally and administratively significant events.
Shah will inaugurate development projects at Batadrava and Borduwa, the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, including the newly constructed Bhagawat Griha.
He will also open the Jyoti-Bishnu auditorium, which accommodates 5,000 people, and launch a state-wide CCTV surveillance initiative.
Next month, Shah is anticipated to return to Dibrugarh to lay the foundation stone for the new Assam Legislative Assembly complex.
Notably, Prime Minister Modi has visited Assam twice this year in February and September, while Amit Shah toured the state in March and August.
The consecutive visits by the BJP's top leadership highlight a strategic approach to integrate governance with political mobilization as Assam prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections.
Encouraging public participation, Sarma stated, “I invite the people of Assam to join these events and witness the extensive development occurring in the state.”
