Robert Garcia, the committee's top Democrat, criticized Gates' decision to engage with Epstein, labeling it a "horrific judgment call."

Gates recounted that he was introduced to Epstein through associates involved in his philanthropic work, drawn by Epstein's claims of being able to raise substantial funds for global health initiatives. Their association began in 2011, three years post-Epstein's guilty plea, and Gates severed ties in 2014 when he realized Epstein could not fulfill his promises. Documentation from the Justice Department includes calendar entries, emails about philanthropic projects, and photographs of Gates at events attended by Epstein.
