Arrest of Suspects Linked to Political Activist's Murder

Kolkata, March 9: Authorities have apprehended two individuals from Bangladesh, implicated in the murder of political figure Sharif Osman Hadi. They reportedly entered India via the Meghalaya border and traversed various regions in the Northeast before being captured in West Bengal.

The West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF) detained the suspects, identified as Rahul, also known as Faisal Karim Masud (37), and Alamgir Hossain (34), in a locality close to the India-Bangladesh border in the North 24 Parganas district on Sunday.

These individuals are accused of the assassination of Hadi, who was a spokesperson for the Inqilab Moncho political faction in Bangladesh.

As per the police, the suspects initially crossed into India through Meghalaya after fleeing Bangladesh and subsequently moved through various locations in the Northeast, ultimately arriving in West Bengal.

“They entered Indian territory illegally via the Meghalaya border and traveled through different areas, eventually reaching Bongaon in West Bengal, intending to return to Bangladesh,” stated the police.

Investigators revealed that the suspects employed false identities and utilized temporary shelters during their journey to evade capture.

Following the shooting incident in December last year, the two men fled Dhaka, initially escaping on a motorcycle and later changing vehicles multiple times to avoid law enforcement.

Officials noted that the duo switched cars at least five times while heading towards the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, using a clandestine route before crossing into India under the cover of night.

Authorities suspect that they may have entered Meghalaya by circumventing surveillance along the international border.

There are indications that the suspects might have been contracted to execute the assassination, and efforts are underway to identify those who orchestrated the attack.

“We are investigating whether the suspects had any local connections while hiding in India and who might have funded the operation,” an intelligence officer commented.

A case has been filed, and the two detainees were remanded to police custody after appearing in court on Sunday. The investigation is ongoing.
