Alliance Formation for Assembly Elections

Guwahati, Mar 20: Following extensive discussions, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and Raijor Dal have officially formed an alliance ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections, with Raijor Dal receiving 11 constituencies to contest.

Raijor Dal will field candidates in Sivasagar, Dalgaon, Dhing, Sissiborgaon, Digboi, Bokakhat, Manas, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Margherita, and Mariani. Furthermore, Goalpara East and Gauripur will be designated as “friendly contest” seats, allowing both parties to run candidates.

During a press conference, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi emphasized that this alliance is informed by past experiences.

“In 2021, we aimed to unite AJP, Congress, and Raijor Dal. Our inability to collaborate then led to losses for all parties involved. This time, the public has expressed a desire for unity, and numerous leaders have made sacrifices to facilitate this alliance,” he stated.

He also mentioned that other parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), and All Party Hill Leaders Conference, have joined this broader opposition coalition.

“A robust opposition is emerging this time. We urge those still in negotiations regarding seat-sharing to unite for a harmonious Assam,” Gogoi added.

He highlighted that the alliance's goal is to promote inclusive development.

“Our vision encompasses development for everyone, not just a privileged few. Access to land rights and opportunities should be available to all,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi characterized the alliance as the result of extensive negotiations.

“After multiple discussions, Congress and Raijor Dal have reached an agreement. For the 2026 Assembly elections, both parties will contest as a united front,” he confirmed.

Earlier, discussions between the two parties had ended without resolution due to disagreements over seat allocation, with Raijor Dal initially requesting 15 seats while Congress proposed 13.

The formation of this alliance among opposition groups indicates a strategic move to present a consolidated front, setting the stage for a highly anticipated electoral battle.
