Angelo Mathews Joins Gujarat Diamonds as Marquee Player for BCL Season 2
Gujarat Diamonds Welcomes Angelo Mathews
On Monday, the Gujarat Diamonds officially revealed that former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews will be their Marquee Player for the upcoming Big Cricket League (BCL) Season 2. This season is set to take place from March 11 to March 22, 2026, at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex Stadium in Greater Noida. Mathews, who retired from international cricket in June 2025, is recognized as one of Sri Lanka's most successful all-rounders. He made his international debut in 2008 and went on to lead the national team.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mathews amassed over 8,000 runs in Test matches and nearly 6,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He also made significant contributions as a right-arm medium pacer. Notably, he was a vital part of Sri Lanka's squad that won the ICC World T20 in 2014, earning respect for his leadership skills and ability to perform under pressure. His addition as a Marquee Player greatly enhances the Gujarat Diamonds as they gear up for their inaugural season in the BCL.
Strengthening the Squad
In addition to Angelo Mathews, the Gujarat Diamonds have built a formidable team that includes both seasoned international players and domestic talents. Key names in the squad are Upul Tharanga, Jesal Karla, Christopher Mpofu, Asela Gunaratne, Sarul Kanwar, and Isuru Udana. This blend of experienced international athletes and skilled first-class players equips the Gujarat Diamonds with the depth and balance needed for a competitive edge in Season 2.
