Massive Plantation Initiative Launched in Uriamghat
Plantation Drive Kicks Off in Golaghat
Golaghat, August 9: A significant plantation initiative commenced on Saturday in Sonari Bil, located within the Rengma Reserve Forest, following the reclamation of nearly 8,900 bighas of forest land.
Residents from the local community, along with officials from various departments, including the Forest Department, joined forces for this event, which aims to plant approximately 15,000 saplings across around 60 hectares of cleared land.
“Today feels like a celebration. The community is thrilled, and many locals came out to participate. We have initiated the planting with 15,000 Uriam saplings,” stated Special Chief Secretary M.K. Yadava, noting that the initiative will run until September 23.
Additionally, the Forest Department has revealed plans to transform the Rengma Reserve Forest into an eco-tourism hub, collaborating with local communities to promote village-based tourism.
“With the support of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we are optimistic that the Rengma Reserve Forest will flourish soon,” remarked Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Pulak Mahanta.
This plantation effort follows a significant eviction operation conducted on July 29, which aimed to remove alleged encroachments from over 11,000 bighas of forest land.
The demolition affected several villages, including Sonaribil Top, 2nd Pithaghat, 2nd Dayalpur, 3rd Dayalpur, Dolonpathar, Kherbari, Bidyapur, Bidyapur Market, 2nd Madhupur, Anadapur, Rajapukhuri, and Gelajan.
Officials indicated that eviction notices were issued to approximately 1,500 of the nearly 2,000 families living in the area prior to the operation.
