Mumbai, July 14: Renowned actress Zeenat Aman has shown her solidarity with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on a hunger strike.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Aman called on the government to engage in dialogue, stressing the necessity of addressing issues through peaceful discussions. The actress, known for her role in ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, commended Wangchuk for his significant contributions to education, environmental sustainability, and community welfare.
Zeenat shared a photo of Wangchuk on her Instagram, stating, “Today, my thoughts are with @wangchuksworld as he enters the 17th day of his indefinite hunger strike in the capital. I came across a report indicating that Mr. Wangchuk is experiencing severe pain and has begun to lose muscle mass.” She quoted him saying, “Don’t ask me to end my fast. Ask the government why they won’t even have a dialogue.”
“Mr. Wangchuk is the founder of SECMOL, the creator of the ice stupa, and a pioneer of educational reform in Ladakh. He is also a committed environmentalist and community advocate, inspiring the beloved Bollywood character ‘Phunsuk Wangdu’ portrayed by Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots. He is widely recognized for his impactful social contributions and has received numerous prestigious awards,” she added.
In her message, Aman urged the Indian government to heed Wangchuk’s call for dialogue regarding issues that affect the future of the nation. She emphasized the importance of not allowing one of India’s brightest minds to be overlooked. “India has a rich history of peaceful protests; those in power must respond to such actions with constructive dialogue. I extend my respect and best wishes to all involved,” she concluded.
Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for 17 days, and his health is reportedly deteriorating. This protest, initiated by the online satirical group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), aims to advocate for educational reforms in India. Additionally, Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), has expressed his support for Wangchuk’s cause while urging him to conclude his hunger strike.
