Yo Yo Honey Singh Reflects on His Struggles with Addiction and Mental Health
Honey Singh's Journey Through Darkness
Yo Yo Honey Singh has shared insights into one of the most challenging periods of his life, revealing that Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar had cautioned him about the dangers of his escalating drug use. In a recent discussion, the rapper and singer reflected on his rapid rise to fame, his battles with addiction, bipolar disorder, and the emotional breakdown that led him to retreat from the public eye at the height of his career.
During his appearance on the ABtalks podcast, Honey Singh acknowledged that between 2011 and 2014, he became overwhelmed by his success, wealth, and addiction. He admitted that he had lost touch with reality during this time. “I was not happy. I was at my peak in 2013 and 2014, but I was not in my senses. I used to think I had achieved everything on my own. I even used to call myself God,” he recounted, noting that fame and drugs had plunged him into a “demonic state of mind.”
He emphasized that it was not the entertainment industry that led to his downfall, but rather his own decisions. Recalling his experiences with Bollywood legends, Honey Singh mentioned that stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar treated him with kindness despite their fame. However, it was Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar who expressed particular concern about his lifestyle, repeatedly warning him about the consequences of drug use. “Shah Rukh Khan told me many times, ‘This is going to spoil you, finish you, and destroy you,’” Honey Singh shared.
After 2014, the rapper, known for chart-toppers like Desi Kalakaar and Blue Eyes, began to experience significant mental health challenges. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while also grappling with substance abuse. In a previous interview, Honey Singh candidly discussed how addiction had taken control of his life, revealing that he smoked multiple joints daily, drank excessively, and distanced himself from family and friends. Following a breakdown during a tour, he stepped back from music in 2017, returned to Delhi, quit drugs, and sought help from medical professionals.
After several years away from the limelight, Honey Singh made a comeback in 2023 with Kalaastar, a sequel to his hit Desi Kalakaar featuring Sonakshi Sinha. He has since been actively touring, releasing new music, and reconnecting with his audience. His recent projects include the album 51 Glorious Days and the track Jhoom Sharabi from De De Pyaar De 2 starring Ajay Devgn.
