Overview of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act
For those unfamiliar, this act was enacted in September 2023 and is commonly referred to as the Women's Reservation Act. It includes provisions for maternity leave, maintenance allowances, and inheritance rights. The law mandates that one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies be reserved for women. With these new provisions, the total number of Lok Sabha seats could increase to 816, with 273 specifically allocated for women. This 33% reservation was introduced through a constitutional amendment in 2023. Previously, the implementation of this rule was contingent upon the delimitation process following the 2027 Census, meaning it would not take effect before 2034. To facilitate its application in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, the government is planning amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and has convened a special session to expedite the process.
