Hoppers Faces Box Office Competition

The animated feature Hoppers from Pixar is currently navigating a tough box office landscape, contending with the release of several new films. Nevertheless, it continues to perform well domestically, striving to reach significant financial milestones before its theatrical run concludes. Hoppers is on track to exceed the domestic earnings of Kung Fu Panda 2, which ranks as the third highest-grossing film in its franchise.

As it stands, Hoppers has become the top-grossing original animated film since the COVID-19 pandemic began, surpassing The Wild Robot in domestic earnings. During its seventh three-day weekend, the film brought in $3.04 million, which is a 26.8% decline from the previous weekend, despite a reduction of 375 screens. On its seventh Tuesday, it earned $326,000, reflecting a 10.2% decrease compared to the same day last week. After 47 days in theaters, Hoppers has amassed a total of $161.8 million domestically.

Kung Fu Panda 2, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, was once the highest-grossing film helmed by a woman upon its release, earning $165.2 million over 127 days at the domestic box office. Hoppers is now less than $5 million away from surpassing this figure, a notable feat considering it has already outperformed Kung Fu Panda 3, which is the lowest-grossing entry in the series.

The current domestic box office rankings for the Kung Fu Panda films are as follows: Kung Fu Panda leads with $216.06 million, followed by Kung Fu Panda 4 at $193.6 million, Kung Fu Panda 2 at $165.2 million, Hoppers at $161.8 million, and Kung Fu Panda 3 at $143.5 million. Hoppers is still working towards its break-even point, which is less than $10 million away, given its production budget of $150 million and a target of $375 million to break even.

Hoppers is scheduled for digital release on April 28, just under two months from now. The film premiered in theaters on March 6, and its performance will be closely watched as it nears the end of its theatrical run.
